Dearest Waverley, our precious newborn daughter,
You’re finally here – hip hip hooray! Your recent arrival is some of the best news we’ve had in 2020!
Oh, little Waves, you were born in one of the most unusual, uncertain times of my generation – in the midst of a global pandemic, in a season of heightened social and political unrest, in a year overwhelmingly overflowing with stories of tragedy and trials. The world and our country is grappling with some major issues right now, which will form the backdrop of your life’s story. 2020 isn’t over yet, and it’s been a year for the history books already.
I wish I could guarantee that the discordant notes of our world will recalibrate and rearrange into a harmonious melody soon. But I just don’t know if that can happen, even though I long to see such change.
What I do know is that YOU, my darling girl, will grow and that you will change. You will learn. You will succeed. You will fail. And over the years, you will become you more and more every day, as you grow into the young girl and then the woman who you were created to be.
When your big sister was born, I wrote that my desire for her was the see the world clearly. To be able to determine fact from fiction and to live with compassion for our broken world and humanity.
Waverley, my sincerest wish for you is…
to make waves of change for good,
to be a part of the solution,
to think critically,
to persevere and persist in following your calling,
to love well and to live fully.
Millions may remember 2020 as the year of hardship as the coronavirus pandemic stopped our modern world in its tracks and brought a tidal wave of adversity and hardship. However, our family will remember this year as the beginning of something new – the new life we’ve found in you. I pray that this global backdrop will frame your life with perspective; as you encounter trials and suffering, you will approach them with ingenuity, patience and hope. And that you will have the wisdom to wade through the waters as the tide rises and falls.
Oh, my dear child, I am happy you are here! I am thankful for your life, a true gift to our family, and I can’t wait to watch you grow into the beautiful person you were meant to be. Now, my little #WaveyBow…
Be brave.
Stand firm.
And go make some waves.
