Are you dreaming of a big trip in the near future, but find yourself overwhelmed by the information overload on the internet and social media? Does it feel like you are standing in the murky waters of uncertainty as you process all of the options presented to you on where to go and what to do?
If so, then let me tell you a secret that can shine some colorful clarity on your dilemma.
Before you start the trip planning process,
first take the time to think through the following questions:
1. What is the main motivation, purpose, or reason of my upcoming trip?
2. What do I hope to get out of my travel experience?
3. How do I want to describe my trip once I’ve returned home?
While these questions may seem simple, they can uncover hidden expectations, reveal particular rhythms, and name helpful goals. As such, your answers can guide you on how to cut through all the noise of the interwebs to select the right destinations, activities, accommodations, etc. that fit within the travel experience you’ve pictured for yourself.
Humor me with these examples:
Susie Q says her main motivation is to break away from her boring, routine job and have a high-energy adventure. She needs lots of planned activities to feel like she’s making the most of her time; she wants to do all the things. Susie dreams of saying to her mom on the phone about her trip: my trip was so much fun! We went sea kayaking in the Mediterranean and hiked the tallest mountain – all in the same day!
Johnny D, on the other hand, says he wants a vacation to unwind and get off the grid. He needs a slow paced itinerary, where he can sit at a coffee shop for a few hours to enjoy people-watching or read. He needs time in the quiet countryside, tasting the freshest Asturian cider and dining on the largest steak he’s ever eaten. Upon his return, he wants to tell his buddy at the gym: I’ve never been more relaxed, and I lost track of time completely.
Do you see where I’m going here?
Once you have identified your goals and expectations honestly and thoughtfully, you can design a travel itinerary to match.
It is one of my biggest secrets to travel planning!
